How do Tampa Bay golfers keep their bodies in golf shape?
The best way for Tampa Bay golfers to stay loose and keep playing well for years is consistent, hands-on mobility work: assisted stretching to restore rotation through the hips, mid-back, and shoulders, plus sports massage to clear the one-sided tension the swing builds up. Golfers get the most out of it as an ongoing plan, typically weekly for the first three to five sessions, then every two to four weeks to maintain. Luke Stokes, LMT, brings both to your home across St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Clearwater, and works with golfers at Pasadena Yacht & Country Club.
The golf swing is a rotation. Your body has to supply it.
Most of what limits an amateur swing isn't technique. It's mobility. Golf asks your body to coil and unwind the same direction thousands of times a season, and Tampa Bay golfers play year-round with no off-season to reset. Here's where that catches up with you, and what Luke does about it.
-
Hips
Tight hips stall your turn. The lead hip can't rotate into the finish, so the swing gets handsy and the lower back takes over.
What Luke does: Hip rotation, hip flexor, and glute stretching to free up a full turn both ways.
-
Mid-back (thoracic spine)
Years of sitting lock up the mid-back. Without thoracic rotation your backswing gets short, and power and consistency go with it.
What Luke does: Assisted thoracic rotation and extension work to restore a full shoulder turn.
-
Lower back
Golf's most common complaint. When the hips and mid-back don't rotate, the lumbar spine twists to make up the difference, round after round.
What Luke does: Take the load off by restoring rotation above and below it, plus massage for the muscles that guard it.
-
Shoulders & lats
Tight lats and a stiff lead shoulder limit how far you can take the club back, and how cleanly you can extend through the ball.
What Luke does: Lat, rotator cuff, and chest stretching paired with targeted shoulder massage.
-
Forearms, wrists & elbows
Grip pressure, range sessions, and the odd fat shot load the forearms. Left alone, that tension can become golfer's elbow.
What Luke does: Forearm and wrist soft-tissue work. For stubborn elbow issues, ART® with Lucas Sands.
-
Hamstrings & calves
Walking 18 holes, then sitting in the car or at a desk. Tight hamstrings pull on the pelvis and make it hard to hold your posture over the ball.
What Luke does: Hamstring and calf stretching so you can stay in your spine angle through impact.
Dawn Wellness provides massage therapy and assisted stretching, not medical care. If you have sharp pain, numbness, or pain that travels down a limb, see your doctor first.
Golf is a lifetime sport. Your body needs a plan for it.
Tampa Bay golfers invest in their game: lessons, launch monitors, a fresh set of irons, club dues. The body that swings them deserves the same investment. And just like your swing, it doesn't improve from one lesson.
A single massage feels great for a day. A consistent plan is what keeps your turn full, your back quiet, and your handicap where you want it into your 60s, 70s, and beyond. That's the approach Luke takes with every golfer he works with: steady, regular upkeep, not a one-time fix.
Why one session is never enough →-
Free 15-minute session
Luke comes to your home, checks how your hips, mid-back, and shoulders rotate, and works on your tightest spot. You feel the difference before you commit to anything.
-
Build your range
Weekly sessions for the first three to five visits. This is where rotation comes back and the aches you've been playing through start to fade.
-
Maintain it
Every two to four weeks once you're moving well. Like regripping your clubs, it's routine upkeep, not an emergency fix.
-
Tune up before big golf
Add a session ahead of a member-guest, club championship, or golf trip, and a recovery session after.
What a session does for your golf.
Every session starts from how your body is moving that week, then targets the areas that limit your swing.
Assisted stretching for golfers
Luke's signature service. He takes your hips, mid-back, and shoulders through golf-specific ranges you can't reach on your own, using PNF techniques that help your body keep the new range. This is where rotation comes back.
About assisted stretching →Sports massage for golfers
Deep, targeted work on the muscles the swing overloads: lats, glutes, the muscles along the lower back, and forearms. It clears the one-sided tension that builds up over a season and helps you recover between rounds.
About sports massage →Stretch + massage combination
What most golfers end up choosing. Massage loosens the tissue, then stretching restores range while the muscles are warm and receptive. One session, both problems, right in your home.
Massage vs. stretching →Dealing with golfer's elbow or a stubborn restriction that won't let go? Our ART® Certified therapist, Lucas Sands, specializes in exactly that. See sports recovery & ART®.
Raised around elite athletes. Trusted by club golfers.
Luke grew up in a house where performing at the highest level was normal. His father, Fred Stokes, spent ten seasons as an NFL defensive end, starting with the LA Rams, and won Super Bowl XXVI with the Washington Redskins. All three Stokes brothers went on to play Division I college sports. Luke played cornerback.
He learned early what it takes to keep a body performing for a long career, and a torn labrum in high school taught him the rest. He studied kinesiology, trained in assisted stretching at StretchZone, and earned his massage license at the Cortiva Institute in St. Petersburg.
Today Luke works at Pasadena Yacht & Country Club, where many of his clients are golfers, and at the Don CeSar Beach Resort spa. He has also hosted events at The Vinoy in downtown St. Pete. Through Dawn Wellness, he brings that same club-level care to your home.

Good questions, answered honestly.
What is the best stretching for golfers in Tampa Bay?
The best stretching for golfers targets rotation: the hips (especially the lead hip), the thoracic spine, the shoulders and lats, and the hamstrings. Assisted stretching works better than stretching on your own because a trained therapist can take those joints into a deeper, golf-specific range and use PNF techniques to help your body keep it. Luke Stokes, LMT, of Dawn Wellness offers assisted stretching for golfers at their homes across St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Clearwater.
Can massage help my golf game?
Yes, indirectly. Golf loads the body the same direction thousands of times a season, which builds one-sided tension in the lats, glutes, lower back, and forearms. Sports massage releases that tension so you can turn freely, recover faster between rounds, and avoid the nagging aches that change how you swing. Massage will not fix a swing flaw, but it removes physical limits that make good swings harder to repeat.
How often should golfers get stretched or massaged?
Most golfers do best with weekly sessions for the first three to five visits to rebuild rotation, then a session every two to four weeks to maintain it. Golfers who play three or more rounds a week, or who are getting ready for a tournament or golf trip, often stay at weekly or every other week. The key is consistency: the body holds new range when it gets repeated, regular input.
Should I get stretched or massaged before or after a round?
Assisted stretching works well the day before a round or the morning of, because it leaves you looser without feeling worn out. Deeper sports massage is best after a round or on a day off, so your body has time to recover from the work. Before an important event, stick with what your body already knows rather than trying something new the morning of.
Why does my lower back hurt after golf?
Lower back pain after golf is usually a rotation problem. When the hips and mid-back cannot rotate enough, the lumbar spine twists to make up the difference, and it is built for stability, not rotation. Restoring hip and thoracic mobility with assisted stretching, and releasing the muscles guarding the lower back with massage, often eases recurring post-round soreness. If you have sharp pain, pain that travels down your leg, numbness, or weakness, see a doctor first.
Is assisted stretching good for senior golfers?
Yes. Assisted stretching is one of the most effective ways for golfers in their 50s, 60s, and beyond to keep the rotation they need to play well. Mobility naturally declines without attention, and a therapist-guided session lets you work deeper than you safely could alone. Luke always works within your comfort level and adjusts for past injuries, joint replacements, or other conditions you tell him about.
Does Luke come to my home?
Yes. Dawn Wellness is fully mobile. Luke brings a professional massage table and everything he needs to your home, condo, or office across St. Petersburg, Tampa, Clearwater, the Pinellas beaches, Dunedin, Safety Harbor, Largo, Seminole, South Tampa, and Westchase. You just need a clear space about six feet long.
What happens during the free 15-minute session?
It is a real, hands-on session at your home, not a sales call. Luke checks how your hips, mid-back, and shoulders rotate, works on your tightest area so you can feel the difference, and gives you an honest recommendation for a plan around your game. There is no charge, no credit card, and no obligation to book anything afterward.
How much does golf stretching or massage cost in Tampa Bay?
The first 15-minute in-home session with Luke is free. After that, a 60-minute assisted stretching or massage session is $150. Bundles lower the per-visit price: 3 sessions save 10%, 5 sessions save 15%, and the 10-Session Bundle for massage or assisted stretching with Luke is $100 per session ($1,000 for 10).
